The Dr K. Sextet formed at the Royal College of Music in 2009. The group consists of members from a diverse range of musical backgrounds, including contemporary, traditional and ethno-musicological influences, and we are committed to using this combined musical experience to create fresh, exciting new music. We have performed widely around the UK, featuring at numerous venues including the Forge Camden, Club Inégales, the Edge Music concert series and Southwark Cathedral, festivals including Roman River Music and the Whitley Arts Festival, and recently featured on BBC Radio 3 ‘Late Junction’. International appearances include an unforgettable appearance at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe.
Dr K. are a regular ensemble in residence for the Cheltenham Music Festival Composer Academy and enjoy an ongoing relationship with Late Music York. They recently worked with composer Ewan Campbell and soprano Lesley-Jane Rogers on ‘The Pierrot Project’, exploring music related to the themes of Schoenberg’s ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ featuring collaboration with visual artists and commissions from a range of established and emerging composers. Recent projects include a celebration of the music of Steve Reich and his ‘Bang On A Can’ associates and ‘Storytelling ‘: a programme of diverse musical and folk traditions in response to the UK-India Year of Culture.
The group is passionate about creating new music as well as performing contemporary classics and has worked with several composers, both established and emerging including Kenneth Hesketh, Jeremy Thurlow, Tom Armstrong, Neil Luck, Arne Gieshoff, James Whittle, Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Daniel Kidane and numerous others. We have also recorded works with several of these composers, and have previously been sponsored by the Tillett Trust, the RVW Trust, Help Musicians UK, Melos Trust, Anglo-American Music Trust and the Hinrichsen Foundation.
Dr K. are dedicated to bringing new music to a wider audience and to young people. We hosted a festival of new music at St Barnabas Dulwich working with the St Barnabas choir, local schools and young composers to create an exciting weekend of workshops and concerts. We have also performed in outreach concerts through the Cadbury Foundation and the Royal College of Music, worked with Cambridge Youth Music and gave workshops in local orphanages whilst in Zimbabwe.
